Chanel Hula Hoop: What we don't need. Or do we?

My sister sent me an email today with the subject "OMG. WANT." She was referring to the Chanel "hula hoop" bag that just walked the runways in Paris. I have very mixed feelings about this bag, but mostly I think it is adorable.

Karl Lagerfeld, the designer of Chanel, is bringing the fun (and play!) back into fashion. Literally. Regardless of the lack of functionality, I think that high fashion designers have been too consumed lately with making clothes that they know consumers will buy. Due to the economic situation, many designers have not been taking as many risks with their designs, as well as with their advertising.

It is difficult for a new model to make any money in today's age, because of the reemerging preference for using well-known models and celebrities. Consumers want to buy from a face they can "trust" or one that is familiar to them.

Fashion has lost some of its "Wow!" factor because designers are playing it safe. They fear making an entire line of clothing that consumers in this day and age will call impractical and unnecessary.

I applaud Karl Lagerfeld for designing this bag, along with the rest of his collection. He is not forgoing his passion for design nor sacrificing Chanel's couture allure just so that he can receive applause and dollars from the consumer.
