Buick's Curious Commercial
As a kid
growing up in America, I associated certain cars with
certain types of people. Therefore, I found it really curious that
this commercial for the Buick Verano is aimed at several different consumers.
The theme of "unexpected pleasures" has universal appeal, and
everyone can relate to getting a pleasant surprise. But throughout the ad,
individuals of different ages, sexes, and colors are featured, so I
felt that Buick was telling us that the Verano was designed for everyone. In
the last scene while viewing the interior features, we get to see the driver--a conservative looking
thirty-something white male. That's the real target demographic, I guess? This
took me by surprise, because a Buick was always a brand driven by older white guys. The
various General Motors models and who was driving them used to tell us
something. We knew who was behind the wheel. If a man was climbing the ladder of
success, he traded in his Chevy for a Buick--the sensible but not too luxurious family
sedan. So, seeing a younger guy driving the Verano, I had to take a
second look. GM managed to stay alive with the government's help and it
seems that it is trying to reinvent itself and asking a new generation to help
keep it alive.
